Litchfield Hills Audubon Society

Welcome to the LHAS Massachusetts Tripp page.

We began to travel annually to the Newburyport area and Cape Ann area of coastal Massachusetts in 1996. The event usually takes place during the third or fourth weekend in February.

Newburyport, Salisbury and Newbury areas are the usual birding locations. The Merrimac River from the Chain Bridge east to the mouth is covered with stops being at Deer Island, Cashman Park, Newburyport Sewage Treatment Plant, Joppa Flats, Plum Island and Salisbury State Reservation. Parker River NWR is also birded entirely. A stop for shopping and lunch is always at the Bird Watcher's Supply and Gift.

Cape Ann includes the fishing port of Gloucester and Rockport with stops at Halibut Point State Park, Andrew's Point, Granite Pier, Atlantic Road, Eastern Point including Niles Beach and Pond, Rocky Neck, Jodrey State Fish Pier, and the Fisherman's Monument.

Some towns and locations may be added during different years. It obviously depends on the rare or uncommon birds visiting the area.

Participants enter a "pool" to try and guesstimate the number of total species seen during the official weekend.

This page is a scrapbook of yearly summaries, bird lists and photos (mostly birds) of our trips. The buttons will take you to the particular areas.
